Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]Blade Runner (Five-Disc Complete Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $24.95
This is the best film ever made, as far as I'm concerned, and this five-disc buffet is the definitive and best version. Ridley Scott influenced a generation with this dystopian view of artificial intelligence, and it has not lost an ounce of its edge.
2001 - A Space Odyssey (Two-Disc Special Edition)2001 - A Space Odyssey (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $6.77
In my book, Blade Runner just barely edges Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece. This is the best First Contact story ever put on film, but it also has layers of meaning in addition to its technical genius. An undeniable and timeless classic that will always be on another level.
AlienAlien
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.75
Not just the best horror film ever, but a landmark work of atmosphere and special effects. Pitch-perfect ensemble acting, a truly terrifying and original enemy, and a setting that has been copied many times all result in a masterpiece of modern cinema.
HalloweenHalloween
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.39
The birth of the slasher genre, and it's never been topped. Halloween is not just an innovative thrill-ride, however; the subtle techniques John Carpenter used to build tension have since been lost in favor of gratuity and exploitation.
Ran (The Criterion Collection)Ran (The Criterion Collection)
Buy used from: $58.99
The best drama ever made. Akira Kurosawa is a genius; he made this film despite being half-blind. Each frame is a carefully planned work of visual art, and the acting and story are elemental.
Raise the Red Lantern (MGM World Films)Raise the Red Lantern (MGM World Films)
Buy new: $69.95 / Used from: $29.97
Yimou Zhang's masterpiece of secrets and lies is beyond captivating. The same can be said for the radiant Gong Li's performance. Only bested by Kurosawa where the art of framing is concerned, Zhang creates a world that is surreal, yet almost too familiar. Unforgettable art.
The TerminatorThe Terminator
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.49
James Cameron's tale of time travel and cyborgs is not just a hugely influential SF/fantasy film, but it's also one of the best action rides ever.
Ghost in the ShellGhost in the Shell
Buy new: $9.71 / Used from: $2.38
The greatest anime ever made. Mamoru Oshii's adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga is anime at its best: riveting action, superb art, and layers upon layers of subtle meaning. GiTS proves that a film does not need live actors to be considered a classic.
Heat (Two-Disc Special Edition)Heat (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $6.98 / Used from: $1.50
As far as I'm concerned, the best crime drama of all time (also sports the best gunfight ever put on film). Al Pacino and Robert De Niro have never been better, and the rest of the cast is no slouch either. From the surreal soundtrack to the depths of character, I don't think Heat will ever be bested in the genre.
Das Boot - The Original Uncut VersionDas Boot - The Original Uncut Version
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.88
Very tough call, but here's my pick for Best War Film. Wolfgang Petersen shows the emotion of war unlike any other. Jurgen Prochnow's performance is the stuff of legends.
